Extent and Medium

records and files from local and regional authorities and institutions in Sealand, Lolland-Falster, Moen and Bornholm. The collections date back to the 12th century, and today there are more than 140 kilometres of shelving.

Biographical History

The Landsarkivet for Sjælland opened in 1893. It was the result of Denmark's first Archives Act, which was adopted on 30th March 1889 in Parliament, that stated that it should be created as a result of the three country's archives in the province. The national archives in Viborg, Odense and Copenhagen were created as subdivisions of the national archives. The regional archives in Åbenrå joined in 1931. In 2012 the Provincial archives of Sealand, Provincial archives of Sealand, Lolland-Falster & Bornholm were merged with the Danish National Archives.

Scope and Content

Landsarkivet for Sjælland collected and stored mainly archival material from local government authorities (e.g., police, courts and ecclesiastical authorities), but some collections also passed from the Zealand estates and from private individuals. In the archive database Daisy one can find tables of contents of the files that are found in provincial archives of Zealand's collection. The collection filled 50,000 linear metres in 2008.

System of Arrangement

Working with the records of the Danish National Archives, Copenhagen is not as simple as going to a library to find a book. The records are not classified by subject, but are arranged in the original order in which they were accumulated.

If you want to find information about a specific subject you should start by finding out which authority was in charge of that particular area – then you can begin to search amongst the records of that authority.
