Acquisition

The Presidial Registry was during the period 1940–1945 situated in the Municipal Registry and other locations (e.g. in the Old City Hall). In 1957 the Presidial Registry was moved to the city archive, and only in 1971 some documents were appraised and the rest arranged. In the same year returned to it were files of the Presidial Registry from the period 1945–50, to where they were moved from the original Protectorate registry – which required the fonds to be reaaranged.

Scope and Content

The fonds contains files originating from the activities of the Presidium of the Land Capital City of Brno, which was themain and coordinating link in the municipal bureaucracy during the period 1940–1945. In the fonds can be found important sources concerning the persecution of Jews: Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia (1940–1942) – among other things revocation of honorary citizenship of Jews; Jewish matters (1940–1942) – ban on Jews entering scientific institutes, Jewish property, amendment of the legal position of Jews, liquidation of Jewish shops, etc.; Deletion of 22 persons of Jewish origin from the list of court expert witnesses for movable property (1942); Abolition of Terezín as a town and preparing it as a location for the concentration of Jews (1942); Art property of the City of Brno – especially frames and paintings bought from Jewish property; Municipal employees and pensioners, Jews of the mixed race and those with Jewish relatives; Municipal employees – salaries of Jewish recipients – official directives; Municipal pensioners – inter alia Jewish pensions.

System of Arrangement

The fonds contains especially files of the so called Group A (matters of general administration and organisation of municipal offices) and Group B (personal effects of municipal employees). The archived material is not arranged chronologically but according to a material key (recording symbol), as it was used by the Protectorate registry during the period 1940–1945. This system was retained during the fonds arrangement.
