Biographical History

The history of many originators of the fonds overlap with the history of individual participants and witnesses of the Czech resistance and Nazi occupation, or institutions that joined the resistance or later included the former resistance movement participants.

Archival History

As early as May 1945, the Presidium of the Municipal Office of the Capital City of Prague commissioned the Prague City Archives to establish the archive of the underground resistance movement. In the following decades, many documents were added to the fonds through donations from witnesses of wartime events as well as from various institutions (e.g. from the Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters). However, the official institutionalization of the fonds did not take place until 1955. It was inventoried in 2015.

Scope and Content

The fonds contains archival materials concerning the history of the Czech resistance during the World War II, the uprising in May 1945 and various aspects of the life of the society in that period. The fonds also includes sources for persecution of the Jewish population such as the Decree on Marriage of Jews and Jewish Half-Breeds from 8 October 1942; announcements of Jewish fiancés and undelivered envelopes from the Prague Municipal Office with copies of marriage and birth certificates for persons of Jewish origin in the transports (1941-1942).

System of Arrangement

The larger, and at the same time the first, part of the fonds was organized by the donors (natural persons) of the archival materials. Individuals are listed alphabetically in the inventory. Within the groups of 'Written Material', 'Material Monuments' and 'Photographs' there are mentions of relevant documents and materials of the given nature. The next part was also organized by the originators, especially institutions, again alphabetically. The last part consists of various materials, divided into the following groups: a) literary-documentary works, b) printed materials, c) documentary materials - miscellaneous, d) photographs, e) material monuments.
