Biographical History

Edithe Fullenbaum-Cukierman was born on 20 February 1942 in Antwerp, Belgium. She is the daughter of Malka Rojza Licht and Saul Cukierman. Malka is the daughter of Isak Majer Licht and Silka Fajga Koreusztajn and was born on 23 January 1914 in Osiek, Poland. Saul Cukierman was born on 2 September 1906, and was a tailor. Malka was in Belgium since 1932, but didn't meet Saul until a few years later. By the time of Edithe's birth, Malka and Saul lived separately for security reasons, in case one of them would get caught by the nazis and not survive. Edithe lived with her mother in Antwerp in a room of Grote Beerstraat 46. She was in the resistance receiving ration tickets from a Flemish pediatrician in Antwerp which she had to deliver to the other Jews for them to be able to buy food on the black market. In the middle of August 1942 there were larger scale raids in the Jewish quarters of Antwerp by the Germans with the help of the Antwerp police. One night when Edithe was only six months old, they came to the street of Malka, and a Belgian policeman knocked on their door. After discovering Malka had a baby, he told her he would seal the door and they would have to remain quiet. They were temporarily saved. When Edithe was eight months old, her mother Malka hid her in Brasschaat with a Christian couple, Frans Roelands and Jeanne Franckaert. Edithe remained with this couple for three years. While in the resistance, Malka was denounced by a young girl who was tortured by the Germans to give up names. Malka was taken to the Dossin barracks in Mechelen. She was tortured as well, but did not give up any information about the resistance. Malka was put on the list for Transport XXVII to Auschwitz-Birkenau, but this transport never left Mechelen as the Germans had retreated from the Dossin barracks the night before the Allied forces approached. Thus, on 4 September 1944, Malka Licht regained her freedom again. After the war, Edithe was reunited with her parents.
