Biographical History

Salomon Goldschlager was born in Siret, Romania, in 1905 as the son of Moritz Goldschlager and Henni Spasser. In 1925, Salomon emigrated from Siret, Romania, to Belgium, where he married the evangelical Edith Blume (b. 1917 in Dour, Belgium). The couple settled in Brussels and would have two children : Raoul Christian (b. 16/07/1939 in Brussels) and Alain (b. 1946, Brussels). In 1936, Salomon’s close friend Josef Hermann Hurtig (b. 10/04/1908 in Siret, Romania) also emigrated to Belgium via Berlin, Germany. Josef married Mary Grunberg (b. 26/12/1907 in Berlin, Germany) on 28 May 1938 in Saint-Gilles, Brussels. On 11 August 1942 the couple was deported from the Dossin barracks to Auschwitz-Birkenau via transport II. Both Josef and Mary perished. On 17 March 1944, Salomon Goldschlager was arrested and interned at the Dossin barracks. However, his marriage to a non-Jewish woman protected him from deportation. Salomon Goldschlager was released on 31 May 1944, because of the mixed marriage. During his internment at the Dossin barracks, Salomon Goldschlager became part of a group of Jewish workers sent from the camp to the SS training centre in Schoten to do maintenance work. Several members of the group managed to escape from Schoten. Upon return at the Dossin barracks, it was Salomon Goldschlager who spread the word among the other Jewish detainees at the Dossin barracks. Salomon Goldschlager, his wife and son all survive the war. His son Alain Goldschlager became a Canadian professor, specializing in antisemitism and the Holocaust.
