History

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, instituted in 1963 and named for its founder, houses many of Boston University Libraries’ special and archival collections. The Gotlieb Center specializes in the personal collections of twentieth century public figures in the fields of literature, criticism, journalism, drama, music, film, civil rights, diplomacy and national affairs. Conditions of Access

As a private research university, the resources, spaces, and staff efforts of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center primarily serve the research, educational, and instructional needs of the Boston University community. Requests for access to collections, and for educational support services from the BU community will be prioritized.

By accessing services remotely, or visiting the Center in person, patrons, researchers and visitors to the Gotlieb Center agree to adhere to the Libraries Code of Conduct, which outlines the expectations and requirements for using Libraries’ spaces and resources to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all.

Accessibility

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center is located on the fifth floor of Mugar Memorial Library and is accessible via the South elevator.

Research Services

In-person research is by appointment only on the first two business days of the week, and appointment requests will be processed according to the order received. Seating in the reading room is limited. Requests for access to collections, and for educational support services from the BU community will be prioritized.

At this time, we are unable to provide duplications of audio or video materials. Limited requests for reproductions of manuscript materials will be processed in the order in which they were received, so long as doing so does not interfere with service to BU students and faculty, copyright, or existing donor agreements.
