History
The City Natural History Museum opened on December 15 (28), 1913, and was a significant event for Mykolaiv. Initially, the museum exhibited a unique collection donated by Emmanuel Frantsev's heirs, featuring minerals, stuffed animals, corals, and more. The museum was established under the oversight of a commission chaired by Serhii Haiduchenko, a lawyer and amateur archaeologist. It started in a rented building and soon received many contributions from city residents. After the revolution and civil war, the museum continued to acquire new exhibits. As the collection grew, the original museum was split into the History and Archaeology Museum and the Natural Museum. In 1929, the museum relocated to a former guardhouse and expanded its collection to over 19,000 exhibits. It later occupied the Admiralty Cathedral and faced political repressions, which affected its expositions. During the Nazi occupation, the museum continued its work, but some archaeological materials were lost. In 1950, the History and Natural Museums merged into the Mykolaiv Oblast Local History Museum, which still exists. Between the 1960s and 1980s, the museum conducted scientific research and expeditions, adding new artifacts every year. It also collected materials related to prominent Mykolaiv residents and acquired significant collections, such as the Russian commemorative medal collection. In the 1970s and 1980s, the museum expanded, and new branches were added to its structure. Notably, the Shipbuilding and Navy Museum opened in 1978. Overall, the museum's history has been eventful, marked by changes, expansions, and challenges, but it remains an important cultural institution in Mykolaiv. There are several branches of Mykolayiv Mykolayiv Regional Museum of the History of Ukraine such as Mykolaiv Shipbuilding and Fleet Museum, Pervimaisk Local History Museum, The “Partyzanska Iskra” (literally: Guerilla Spark) Museum, the military history museum “The Underground Partisan Movement in Mykolaiv Oblast in 1941–1944”, and The Ochakiv Military History Museum.
