History

The Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) was established as an independent public research institution in 1981. It provided an institutional structure for a number of institutes that had already existed for several decades, organized as research departments of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Since that time, it has established itself in the Slovenian public space as the leading scientific-research institute, working primarily in the humanities, social sciences, and selected disciplines within the natural sciences. Today it consists of eighteen institutes, most of which are located on Novi trg in the center of Ljubljana and one in Postojna. Four research centers have been established outside Ljubljana: Research Station Nova Gorica, Research Station Maribor, Research Station Prekmurje, and most recently, Research Station Barje established in 2018.

In addition to the eighteen institutes, ZRC SAZU also includes the publishing house Založba ZRC, which publishes both academic and non-academic books and a large number of academic journals. Založba ZRC also runs the Azil Bookshop, which specializes in literature in the humanities and social sciences. The Maks bookstore also opened its doors in February 2024. It is the first academic bookshop in Nova Gorica to offer specialist literature from the humanities and social sciences.

Archival and Other Holdings

ZRC SAZU has more than 60 collections, toolkits, databases, etc., some of which originate from various research projects. One such collection, which could be of interest to Holocaust researchers, also contains 10 transcribed interviews with Jews from Prekmurje and witnesses of their deportation.
