History

Established in 2013, the Jewish Cultural Center (JCC) in Ljubljana is a private institution dedicated to Holocaust remembrance, education and the promotion of Jewish culture. The JCC serves the social life of the city's Jews and international visitors by presenting educational topics through theater and puppet theater performances, concerts, lectures, Jewish holidays and other social events. The JCC's educational mission, which includes curatorial projects, exhibitions and practice-based research, aims to explore and present a variety of facets related to the Holocaust and its profound impact on society. The JCC works closely with the Mini Theater.

Archival and Other Holdings

The JCC houses a small Jewish museum and a permanent Holocaust exhibition dedicated to the Holocaust in Slovenia. The JCC Museum is housed in two different rooms of the building. The “Golden Room” on the first floor has wooden beamed ceilings from the 16thto 18th centuries, from which an old lamp from the Beltinci Synagogue hangs. The entire collection of the Iconotheca Valvasoriana can also be viewed here. On the upper floor, next to the JCC library, is the museum’s main exhibition room, where Judaica from all over Slovenia and works of art depicting Jewish life in Ljubljana are on permanent display. Here you can see a number of paintings and prints by Bard Iucundus and Anton Karinger. The museum is also the venue for traveling exhibitions.

Finding Aids, Guides, and Publication

The library, located in the multi-purpose JCC Museum and project space, is aimed at scholars, students, school groups, individuals, etc. The more than 300 books, written in Slovenian, German, Serbo-Croatian and English, range from art and design to religious literature and philosophy.
