History
State Archive of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast was established in 1940. From the beginning archive started to collect documents of newly established Jewish Autonomous Oblast, state institutions, social and cultural organisations.
In 1978 archive moved to the new building with is 40 000 archival folders.
Geographical and Cultural Context
Archive holds documents referring to the history of the Jewish Autonomy in Birobidjan Region from its establishment in 1930s until today (as well as few record groups from the period 1864-1917).
Archival and Other Holdings
Archive holds today 1100 record groups and 300 000 archival folders, holding documents from the period 1864-2008.
Archive holds documents referring to the history of the Jewish Autonomy in Birobidzhan Region from its establishment in 1930s until today.
Besides documents from the Soviet period, archive has some pre-1917 collections (Soyozensk and Ekaterinburg-Nikolaev Customs Office, Nikolaev Post and Telegraph and others).
Research Groups of the archive consist of documents referring to: settlement of the Birobidzhan region, Jewish Autonomous Oblast state institutions, Jewish settlements, villages and collective farms, Jewish culture and science, schools, libraries and other cultural institutions, regional press and other publications).
For the Holocaust researchers of special interest may be documents of the veterans of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945)
