History

The state archive of Marijampole county was established in 1944. After the administrative-territorial reform in 1950, the archive was named Marijampolė district state archive (from 1955 Kapsuks district state archive). December 20, 1956, the archive was moved to other premises. Some of the documents were damaged due to poor storage conditions. Since 1964, the state archives of the districts were liquidated and the Central State Archive of the LTSR with 10 branches was established. Among them was the Kapsukas branch. The branch started to control and collect funds from institutions, companies, and organizations of the Kapsukas, Šakiai, and Vilkaviškis districts. Due to the lack of space, documents from institutions were not accepted for state storage, some non-profile funds were even returned to the institutions, and a number of fonds were transferred to the Central State Archives. In the spring of 1990, the archive was moved to the current premises, where, in addition to other special-purpose premises, a reading room was also established. Since then, the location of the archive has not changed, only the name itself has changed:

From 1990-07-25 to 1993-05-28 -- Marijampole state archive; From 1993-05-28 to 1997-03-07 -- Marijampole District Archive From 03/07/1997 to 01/01/2017 -- Marijampole county archive. From 01/01/2017 -- Marijampolė branch of the Kaunas Regional State Archive
