History

The Šiauliai Regional State Archive was founded in 1944. In the first years of its operation, the archive compiled the surviving documents compiled by Šiauliai city and county institutions before 1918. The main function of that time was the collection, management, and creation of an information search system. 1964 The Šiauliai regional state archive, at that time called the Šiauliai city state archive, was reorganized and named the Šiauliai branch of the Central State Archive of the Lithuanian SSR. It was tasked with further equipping and guarding the liquidated towns of Joniškis, Kelmės, Pakruojis, Radviliškis, Šiauliai, etc. documents of district archives and other operating institutions. In 2007, the reconstruction works of the building were completed. During them, a four-story extension was built and another floor was built on top of the old premises of the building. The total area of ​​the building increased from 403 m2 to 824 m2. 2162 meters of shelves are additionally equipped. Now the length of the shelves for document storage reaches 5 km. In 2017, during the reorganization of the entire archive system, by connecting the Panevėžys county archive to the Šiauliai county archive, the name Šiauliai regional state archive was given, and the Panevėžys county archive received the legal status of a branch.

Geographical and Cultural Context

Preserves documents of the regional state, municipal, and non-state institutions, enterprises, and individuals of the Šiauliai, and Panevežys counties from 1945 until the present day. Archives are also involved in the supervision of records management of local public institutions.

Mandates/Sources of Authority

The activities of the Archives have been arranged in accordance with the Lithuanian Constitution, European Union legislation, and additional laws that regulate the activities of the Archives as a public government office.

Archival and Other Holdings

At present, the documents preserved in the Archives occupy approximately 6 900 linear metres of shelving space. The fonds preserved in the Archives comprise several large sets: Documents relating to the period of the Republic of Lithuania (1918–1940): fonds of Šiauliai Municipality dated 1926–1933, and documents of Šiauliai Tax Inspectorate dated 1938–1940. Documents relating to the Soviet occupation periods (1940–1941 and 1944–1990): documents of the local governments, justice, planning, statistics, finance, construction, transport, trade, education, culture, health care institutions, industrial enterprises, collective farms, state farms, public organizations, and other institutions that operated in Šiauliai and Panevėžys counties; Fonds relating to the period of independence (since 1990): documents of the state institutions and local governments, other organizations and institutions, industrial enterprises, as well as non-governmental institutions, and private legal entities that were and still are functioning on Šiauliai and Panevėžys Counties. A set of personal collections of writers, engineers, scientists, and prominent figures in culture, health care, or education – those who resided or are still residing in Šiauliai and Panevėžys Counties.

Holocaust related are records of various state agencies (the County Tax Office. State Notary, County Executive Committee) related to the history of the Jewish Community of Šiauliai County, Lithuania, before, during, and after World War II. It includes records related to the payment of taxes, information about real estate, lists of the nationalized property, payrolls and correspondence files, court and notary files concerning inheritance and restitution of Jewish property after WWII, and other documentation.

on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.;

on Friday from 8 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.;

lunch break - from 12:00 p.m. until 12:45 p.m.;

on the eve of public holidays, the duration of the working day is shorter by one hour

Conditions of Access

The reading room serves only registered readers who have submitted written requests to the reading room employee directly, by mail, or by other electronic means.

Information about the documents stored in the archive and the services provided by the reading room can be obtained directly from the reading room, by phone at +37068382055, or by e-mail at siauliai@archyvai.lt. Searching for documents is carried out with the help of archive information systems, archive fond directories, descriptions, files, topographic files and according to the alphabetical and systematic catalogs of some fonds.

Reproduction Services

Analog and digital copies of documents are made on the order of readers, upon payment for their production according to the established procedure. Upon request, it is allowed to photograph documents with personal photographic equipment.
