History

In 1941 USSR Council of People’s Commissar issued a resolution, according to which, together with other archives Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents should be established in USSR of Georgia. Audiovisual documents owned by Archival Affairs Management were scattered in different institutions and building (museums, libraries, studios etc) since then. It was necessary to gather and dispose them better. In the letter dated back with 1943 Avksenti Rafava, People’s Commissar of Internal Affairs was worried, because it was not realized yet. As a respond of the letter, addressees noted non-existence of the needed building as a reason.

In spite of this, the case moved on and in 1944 nominal existence of the Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents was registered. Though because of the situation connected with World War the Second the archive has not been functioning since 1946.

At first only photo and film divisions were existing at the archive. Lately, in 1962 audio division was officially added to the archive. Nowadays, divisions of photo, film, audio documents, use and publication, as well as digital technologies are functioning at the Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents.

More than 500 thousand photos, about 20 thousand audio records and nearly 35 thousand film documents are gathered at the archive. Process of supplement of the archive with the documents was coursed since the day of establishment till nowadays.

Records Management and Collecting Policies

Collecting policy of the Central audio-visual Archive is determined according to the Archive’s regulations. Since the establishment till the present time archive works on the supplement of the National Archival Fonds.

The source of completing the archive might be state institution or its judicial heir, as well as private persons. To receive the audio-visual materials archive guides with the following criterion of estimation:

research value, uniqueness, vowel and photographical quality of information, physical conditions link of their content with the other documents preserved at the archive In the process of gifting or purchasing the material, archive discusses issues like accessibility, conservation and protection, as well as the presentation, exhibition, research and reproduction of the material.

Research Services

Accessibility to the archival materials, preserved at the Central Audio-Visual Archive is free. Interested person can search for and acquaint with the document of the National Archival Fonds or its copy through the informational-search system and make use of the informational service of archive.

Systematic, thematic and nominal catalogues of films, systematic and nominal catalogues of photos, genre-thematic and executor-author’s catalogues of audio records were created at the archive.

More than 10 000 photos are accessible in digital format via electronic online catalogue created in the frames of UNESCO Participation Program. Archive works on creation of united electronic catalogue of film, photo and audio records. It will give opportunity the interested persons to search for the information about the audio-visual materials via internet.

In case of publication the audio-visual document, full name of the archive should be mentioned. In case of using documents in digital format inserting of the logo of the National Archives is inevitable.
