History

After World War II, in March of 1945, the American Joint Distribution Committee prompted the creation of the COJASOR (Comité Juif d’Action Sociale et de Reconstruction). Its purpose was to consolidate the material and moral support given to survivors through the Fédération des sociétés juives de France, Comité d’assistance aux réfugiés and the Comité général de défense.

At the end of the war, a few institutions hosted lone, elderly people who had spent many years in the French concentration camps. As the population aged, the COJASOR directed its services toward the elderly in convalescent homes in Nice and in Aix-les-Bains as well as at home through the ADIAM, a home aid service and GADCOM, a homecare service. As of 1973, the COJASOR provided guardianship services for legally and functionally incapacitated individuals over the age of 18 years.

As of the mid- 1950’s, the COJASOR provided services for the waves of Jewish immigration from the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

In 2000, the CASIP and COJASOR merged to become the CASIP-COJASOR Foundation. With support of the FMS (Fondation pour la Mémoire de Shoah), a service for the survivors of the Shoah and their beneficiaries is created in 2001. It serves the dual purpose of providing information and support for indemnity claims to survivors as well as organizing social and cultural activities.

Archival and Other Holdings

Some post-war Holocaust-related COJASOR-archives are still at this organisation. These files include both general files and individual files of war victims. The historical archives of the CBIP for the periode 1809-1963 are inventorised.

The bulk of the Holocaust-related materials have been transferred to the Archives of the Mémorial de la Shoah.
