History

Like all the departmental archives, the Rhône Archives were created by the law of 5 Brumaire An V, which required the central departmental administrations to "bring together in the departmental capital all the titles and papers in the repositories belonging to the Republic". Previously, each administration kept its own archives, which meant that they were widely dispersed. The administrative collections were then supplemented by the archives of ecclesiastical establishments, as a result of the confiscation of the property of the clergy (2 November 1789), emigrants and convicts (30 March 1792). Conditions of Access

Anyone can come and consult the archives free of charge. All you need to do is register by showing an identity card. You will then be issued with a reader's card. Registration must be renewed every year.

The reading room is open without prior reservation from Tuesday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, and on Thursdays until 6pm (excluding school holidays). The last document order is at 4pm.

Readers may use the lockers provided. Washrooms and vending machines for drinks and snacks are available to readers. However, it is not possible to have lunch in the hall.

Following changes to the library's IT system, documents may only be reserved using the "Reservation request" form. It is possible to reserve 2 documents in advance. Requests must be made no later than 12 noon on the day before your visit. Registration is free, but compulsory, and must be renewed every year. The daily quota is 20 documents.

Readers order their documents for the day on the library's intranet portal. Documents are collected from the library staff and returned after consultation.

Accessibility

The Archives building is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Consultation areas in the reading room have been adapted for wheelchair users.

Research Services

The staff in the reading room provide readers with information and methodological advice, and show them how to use the Archives' management software and website. They cannot, however, take the place of readers when it comes to their research.

Reproduction Services

It is possible to make reproductions of documents that can be freely communicated, when they are free of copyright and for personal use. If you are planning to make a reproduction for a publication or exhibition, please contact the reading room supervisor. A scanner is available free of charge for reproducing documents in the reading room. A reader/reproducer can be used to read and make copies of microfilms. A USB key is required for these devices. Keys marked with the Archives logo are on sale at reception for €10. The use of a personal camera without flash is authorised on request. The Archives can provide you with a tripod.

If the Archives du département du Rhône et de la métropole de Lyon already have a reproduction, they can send it to you free of charge by any electronic means at your convenience: sending it by courier or making it available on a download platform.

If your request is of an administrative or legal nature, and only in this case, you can submit your request by filling in these forms.

For other reproductions, the Archives do not have the necessary resources to satisfy requests. You must consult the document in the reading room and make the reproduction yourself by photography (without flash).
