History

The SGG is the professional association of historians in Switzerland. It was founded in 1841 as the Allgemeine geschichtforschende Gesellschaft der Schweiz (AGGS).

Mandates/Sources of Authority

The SGG is committed to promoting the historical sciences and historical education. It represents the interests of the discipline vis-à-vis third parties. It pursues these goals by issuing publications, by thematic work and activities, by providing services to the community and the public, and by organising events, including the Swiss History Days every three years. It is constituted as an association and belongs as a professional society to the Schweizerische Akademie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften (SAGW) (Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences).

SGG publishes advertised historical research and commissioned work. In this way, the SGG aims to simplify the Swiss market for commissioned historical work and make it more transparent. As the professional association of Swiss historians, it not only has the necessary legitimacy to do so, but also the required knowledge and contacts. Assignments supervised by the SGG are specially marked. Firstly, the SGG advises companies, municipalities and associations on the professional awarding of independent commissioned research. Secondly, the contracts that are put out to tenders are published on the website so that they can be viewed by the public. Both larger research projects and smaller archival research can be published on the site. Thirdly, the SGG creates the necessary framework conditions in the background for successful project completion.
