Mandates/Sources of Authority

The State Archives ensure the long-term preservation, scientific processing and communication of the archival material. In cooperation with the Cantonal Library in Trogen, the State Archives ensure a coordinated documentary tradition of the canton.

The archives of the twenty municipalities in Ausserrhoden are of great importance for the historical tradition of the canton, which has existed since 1597. The State Archives and the communal archives ensure coordinated archiving. The State Archives support the communal archives with indexing and provide information about their holdings.

Records Management and Collecting Policies

The classical archival material stored in the State Archives, which currently comprises around 4,800 linear metres, is divided into twelve sections of varying size: https://www.ar.ch/verwaltung/kantonskanzlei/staatsarchiv/benutzung-und-bestaende/bestaende/

Building(s)

In 2012, the State Archives of Appenzell Ausserrhoden moved into the new premises in the annex of the armoury at Schützenstrasse 1a in Herisau. This provides users with a spacious reading room with direct access to the archive library.

Archival and Other Holdings

The State Archives of Appenzell Ausserrhoden hold the archival documents of the authorities, offices and courts of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It takes over other documents of public institutions or private origin that are significant for Appenzell history.

The holdings can be searched online in the archive catalogue of the State Archives.

The history of Appenzell from its beginnings until the division of the land in 1597 is documented in the Joint Archives kept in the State Archives of Appenzell I.Rh..
