History
SCOB is a research centre founded at the University of Antwerp (BELGIUM) in 1999 when the University of Antwerp obtained the official price lists of the Brussels Stock Exchange (Euronext Brussels by now). SCOB obtained also the price lists and archives of the Antwerp Stock Exchange (1844-2002), as well as the archives of the Liege Stock Exchange and the Ghent Stock Exchange (1902-1992).
Geographical and Cultural Context
The main goal of SCOB is to study the financial data and history of the Belgian Stock Exchanges and the companies listed on it. Several publications are by now realised.
Administrative Structure
SCOB is an interdisciplinary initiative of several departments of the University of Antwerp (Economics, History and Computer Sciences). In 1999 SCOB joined efforts with CBG, the Antwerp based Centre on the History of Companies (History Department).
Building(s)
The Hof van Liere is a 16th-century city palace with courtyards, gardens and galleries. Mayor Arnold van Liere had the gigantic palace built between 1515 and 1520 in Brabant Gothic style. After the death of the owner, the city of Antwerp accommodated the 'English Nation' here, but they left after the Spanish fury in 1576. Since 1607, when the Jesuits established a boarding school here, education has been provided in the buildings. Today it is part of the city campus of Antwerp University.
