In 2002, the National Archive Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan was established on the basis of the General Archive Department at the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the Decree 816 of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Improving Archive Work in the Republic of Azerbaijan". Today, the archive system of the Republic of Azerbaijan includes 6 state archives of republican significance, 15 branches of the State Archives, state archives of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, as well as 55 regional and city-state archives subject to the National Archives Department.
