History
The Austrian Bishops’ Conference, established in 1849, is one of the oldest in the world. The Conference comprises all the diocesan and auxiliary bishops holding office in the Austrian dioceses, along with the Abbot of Wettingen-Mehrerau.
Geographical and Cultural Context
The Austrian Bishops' Conference, approved by the Apostolic See, comprises the bishops of Austrian dioceses. Its main functions include studying pastoral duties, mutual consultation, coordinating Church activities, making joint decisions, and fostering connections with other bishops' conferences.
Mandates/Sources of Authority
The plenary assembly, the primary organ, convenes regularly, with the chairman representing the conference externally and sharing the outcomes publicly. Members' participation is obligatory, but they can be excused for illness or higher authorities' obligations. The conference discusses various matters, and the statute governs decision-making procedures and promulgation through its official gazette.
