The City Archives holds archives from the city's administrations and from government agencies operating in Malmö. The City Archives also holds private, family, association, photo and company archives. Malmö City Archives holds documents from authorities and individuals from the Middle Ages onwards. The main task of the City Archives is to ensure that the common cultural heritage is preserved and accessible to the public.

The archive was originally housed in Malmö City Hall at Stortorget, but moved in 1956 to the old Riksbank building on Adelgatan and in 1991 to newly built premises in Västra hamnen at Isbergs gata 13. On November 8, 2014, the city archive's new premises were inaugurated in Arbetet's old newspaper building at Bergsgatan 20.
