  3. Eric Sommer collection

    Collection consists of two false ID cards issued to Eric Sommer’s parents, David and Hilde Sommer, German Jews who were able to survive the Holocaust in France passing as non-Jews. The cards were issued to "Emile Schwebel" and "Henriette Schwebel" in March 1943 in La Mure and February 1943 in Sainte-Colombe-la-Campagne, France. Also included with the collection is a copy of a handwritten memoir.

    Contains information about the hiding of Jews during the Holocaust by the citizens of Prélenfrey-du-Gua, France, more specifically by the Guidi family, proprietors of the Les Tilleuls preventorium for tuberculosis patients. Also contains several articles relating to the Jews saved at Prélenfrey-du-Gua and recent photographs of the Les Tilleuls preventorium. Serge Klarsfeld provided a preface to the manuscript.

    The opening credits list the countries from which documents from the film have been obtained. The first scene shows a man running through the woods, followed by men in Nazi uniforms, who shoot and kill him. The Nazis remove the dead man's passport: close-up on the "J" which indicates he was a Jew. This "J" becomes the "J" in the title of the film. The first part of the film provides a biography of Globke. The filmmakers use footage of early Nazi leaders (including Goering and Goebbels) and documents signed by Globke to make the point that he was in league with the Nazis from early on. Globk...
