    As the registry books date until the immediate pre-war time, this collection provides important insights and information about the Jews of this once important Slavonian town, all of whom perished in the Holocaust.

    The collection should provide insight into the paths leading to the perishing of the Jews of Pozega and the introduction of race laws. The time range extends until the change of power in Croatia, i.e., the introduction of the Independent State of Croatia (April 10, 1941).

    On 8 September 1943, Italy capitulated and the Independent State of Croatia officially recognized the Rome contracts, along with the Treaty of Rapallo of 1920, which had given Italy the territories of Istria, Fiume (now Rijeka), and Zara (Zadar). German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop approved of the NDH taking the Dalmatian territories gained by Italy at the time of the Rome contracts.     The local people's committees were established as district national liberation committees during 1943 and 1944. They represented the state administration bodies and local self-government and were responsible for establishment and provision of government services in administrative areas. This administration included various departments, e.g., for legal matters (formation of people's courts), education, social affairs, the economy, trade and commerce, technical matters, etc. They ended during 1946, in accordance with the new territorial and administrative changes.

    The collection is incomplete and contains various instructions and orders issued and received by the city authorities of Križevci. Researchers of the Holocaust will find files regarding the activities of the State Office for Renewal [Državno Ravnateljstvo za ponovu] here. This office oversaw the managing and distributing of property confiscated from Jews during the Holocaust. In addition, for scholars interested in perpetrator studies the files of the city employees are a potentially helpful source.

  20. Velika Župa Posavje

    • The Great Governorate of Posavje

    Velika Župa was the highest regional authority in the Independent State of Croatia. It was responsible only to the Poglavnik Ante Pavelić, who personally named its leader, and to the respective state ministries. Velika Župa Posavje was founded on 10 June 1941 with the seat in the contemporary town of Slavonski Brod and continued to function until 1945. Velika Župa Posavje included the administrative units (kotar) of Bijeljina, Brčko, Brod na Savi, Derventa, Gradačac and Županja.
