United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, Gift of Ferenc (Frank) Katona

Ferenc Katona donated his father's collection to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives on Mar. 28, 2003. An accretion to this was received in June 2017.

Scope and Content

Contains German and Hungarian language letters of protection (Schutzpässe) issued by the Swedish and the Swiss embassies in 1944 in Budapest, Hungary, to Rabbi József (Joseph) Katona. Also contains pre-war and post-war photographs of groups of Hungarian rabbis; included are photographs of József Katona, the chief rabbi of Dohány, Hungary. Subsequent accretion (2017) includes correspondence, typescript text of sermons, documents, newspapers, and further information about Rabbi Dr. Katona and his family.
