Their son Richard was born in Belgrade in 1927. Paul Weiss was working as a musician in Belgrade at the time of his son's birth. The family escaped from Vienna to Tunis in 1938. The escape was made possible due to Paul's work; he went to perform in Tunis in the prestigious La Rotonde coffee house. The family lived in Tunis for approximately six months, and afterwards, they moved to Marseilles, where they remained as refugees supported by the Joint Distribution Committee. In 1939 they escaped to Shanghai. In Shanghai the family lived in the French Section and was deported to the ghetto in 1943. Paul was employed as a violinist and after the deportation to the ghetto he received an exit permit for work purposes. While he was in the ghetto, Richard served as the president of Moadon Hatikva, the clubhouse of the young people in Shanghai. After the liberation by the US Army in 1945, Richard was drafted to serve as a driver for the US Army. Richard left Shanghai and went to study Law in Chicago in 1947; he made aliya and completed his studies in 1950. Paul and Aranka remained in Shanghai until 1949, when they were transferred to Canada by the US Army. From there they moved to the United States.
