Biographical History

The collection was created by the Zsidó Világkongresszus Magyarországi Képviselete / Jewish Agency for Palestine Dokumentációs Osztálya (the Documentation Department of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress / Jewish Agency for Palestine) in 1945-1946.

Scope and Content

The collection contains descriptions, including their hand-written originals, of a host of Nazi contentration camps. These descriptions are based on the very large pool of survivor testimonies recorded by the Deportáltakat Gondozó Országos Bizottság (DEGOB) and aim to describe the main characteristics of Nazi camps. The camps described include major ones such as Bergen-Belsen, Mauthausen, Oranienburg, Sachsenhausen and Theresienstadt. In certain cases the descriptions are supplemented by hand-drawn maps of the camps as well as maps of routes of deportation. The collection also contains a list of former labor service guards who committed various crimes against labor servicemen. This list was compiled by the Documentation Department of the Hungarian Representation of the World Jewish Congress / Jewish Agency for Palestine. There are also Hungarian- and English-language versions of the reports written by Sándor Náthán, envoy of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, who had made investigations in several countries with the aim of recording the condition and status of Hungarian Jewish survivals in various locations.
