    The Karliner family papers consist of wartime correspondence and photographs taken of the Karliner family in Germany before World War II, aboard the MS St. Louis, in France while in hiding at Oeuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE) homes, and during the post-war years. The correspondence is written by members of the Karliner family, many of whom perished in the Holocaust at the Auschwitz concentration camp.   6. Map of Theresienstadt drawn by an inmate while in the camp

    Map given to Max and Johanna Liebmann by Bedrich Borges, whose brother Erik drew the map while interned at Theresienstadt concentration camp in German occupied Czechoslovakia. The artist told his brother that he drew the sketch under the orders of the SS command in the camp. The sketch is marked as an air raid shelter, however, the intended use was as a gas chamber. Erik was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and killed in 1944.

    German, factory-printed Star of David badge, acquired postwar by Ernest Bergman. On September 1, 1941, all Jews in the Reich six years of age or older were required to wear a badge, which consisted of a yellow Star of David with a black outline and the word “Jew” printed inside the star in German.     Golden brown Steiff bear owned by Hans Butzke and used by his parents, Julius and Netty, to smuggle family valuables out of Vienna, Austria, when they left for Panama in early 1940. Jews were not permitted to take valuables from Germany, so Netty sewed the items, including a ring and possibly pearls, inside the bear. She told Hans not to let anyone take it from him, but did not tell him about the jewels hidden inside. The bear wears Hans’ baby clothes. On March 13, 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany.
