History

Archive of the Kabardin-Balkar region was established in 1936. In January 1937 it contained 155 record groups, among them 33 referring to the pre-1917 period, 63 392 document folders among which 29 917 had their descriptions.

In 1940 Archive was restructured into Central Archive of the Kabardin-Balkar Autonomous Socialist Republic. In 1941 most important documents of the archive were marked for the evacuation, others were hidden in the various localities in the region or destroyed. Most important documents were transferred in October 1942 to Central Asia to the city of Stalinabad. During the war 44 archival record groups were lost.

Archive resumed its work in April 1943.

For 01.01.2014 the archive contains 930 record groups: 299 158 document folders and 348 355 photographs.

Central State Archive of the Kabardin-Balkar Republic contains documents referring to the social-economic, civic, political and cultural history of the Republic from the 1811 until the present day. Among them researchers may find: state decrees referring to the Northern Caucasus from the years 1855-1868, security documents from the Soviet period, documents about deportations and repatriation of the Balkars in the years 1944-1960, documents referring to the various aspects of the 1941-1945 war and German occupation.
