History

The state archive in Tarnów came into existence according to the ordinance of the State Archives Department in the Ministry of Education from December 1st 1950. At first it was the County Branch of the Kraków Voivodship Archive, later (from 1952 to 1975) the Tarnów County Archive, and from 1975 again the Tarnów Branch of the Kraków archive. The original location of the Tarnów archive were the buildings at Kniewskiego (later: Bernardyńska) street. In 1991 the archive was transferred to its present seat at 16 Chemiczna street in the industrial Mościce district.

Nowadays, the Tarnów Branch of the National Archive in Kraków works on the ground of the The Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes.

From 1991 the Tarnów archive is located at 16 Chemiczna street (former Azot cinema) in the industrial Mościce district.

Archival and Other Holdings

The archive in Tarnów possesses 697 collections and archival founds, which makes 141 070 units and 2313 running meters. There are records of municipal and rural administration, judicial documents, vital records, documents from financial institutions,guilds, associations and schools. The oldest documents are concerning some noble families from Tarnów vicinity. The archive gathers also deposits of private persons, maps, plans and posters.

Opening Times

The archive’s holdings are available in the workroom open Monday – Friday 9.00 – 15.00.

Conditions of Access

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
