History

The archive in Łomża was created in 1952 as a Łomża County State Archive according to the Order of Chief Director of the State Archives. In 1954 the archive was renamed as a branch of State Archive in Białystok.

Mandates/Sources of Authority

Nowadays the branch of Białystok State Archive in Łomża works on the ground of the Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes.

The archive is located in the building of former prison in Aleja Legionów.

The archive in Łomża possesses following categories of documents: state and local administration, special administration (military, financial, statistical, school, and repatriation offices), judiciary, registry offices, religious institutions (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Jewish), banks and insurance, factories and cooperatives, political parties (e.g. Voivodship Committee of the Polish Communist Party - PZPR).
