History

The Country Archive of Town and Land Records (Krajowe Archiwum Akt Grodzkich i Ziemskich) in Kraków came into existence September 2nd 1878. In 1919 it was renamed Country Archive and in 1936 State Archive in Kraków. Since 1887 existed also in Kraków the Archive of the Historical Records of the City of Kraków at 16 Sienna street. This municipal archive was attached to the State Archive in 1952. From 1952 to 1984 the state archive in Kraków was named Kraków Voivodship Archive, then returned to its former name. According to the Decree of the Minister of Culture from December 5th 2012 the archive was renamed National Archive in Kraków.

Nowadays, The National Archive in Kraków works on the ground of the The Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes, and the Decree of the Minister of Culture from December 5th 2012, renaming the archive as the National Archive in Kraków.

Building(s)

The main seat of the National Archive in Kraków is the building at 16 Sienna street. Besides the direction and administration of the archive it houses the 3rd Department (documents of the city of Kraków, local government, schools and religious institutions. The 1st Department (state administration and judicial documents created before 1795) is placed in the Wawel Royal Castle. The 2nd Department (state administration and judicial documents from XIX and XX century) is placed at 52 Grodzka street. The 4th Department (documents of business entities and documents dated after 1945) is placed at 7 Orzeszkowej street. The 5th Department (cartographical collections and technical documentation) is placed at 25b Lubicz street. There are workrooms in all departments of the archive. Construction of the new building containing all the departments of National Archive is planned.

The National Archive in Kraków possesses 4511 collections and archival founds.

Opening Times

The State Archive’s holdings are available in the five workrooms (Wawel Castle, Grodzka street, Sienna street, Orzeszkowej street, Lubicz stree, all open Monday - Friday 9.00 – 15.00.

Conditions of Access

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
