History

The Archive in Gdynia was created in 1951 as a County State Archive. In 1976, according to the reform of state administration, the archive became a branch of the Voivodship State Archive in Gdańsk (from 1984 - State Archive in Gdańsk).

Mandates/Sources of Authority

Nowadays. The branch of Gdańsk State Archive in Gdynia works on the ground of the Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes.

Building(s)

Initially the holdings of the Gdynia archive were dispersed in various buildings in Gdynia and Sopot. In 1979 the archive was located at Starowiejska street and in 1991 it was transferred to the former school building at Grabowo street. Finally in 1993 the archive obtained the building at Handlowa street. After the renovation his building became the seat of Gdynia archive. Also the part of the holdings of the Gdańsk archive is stored here.

Archival and Other Holdings

The archive in Gdynia possesses the following kinds of holdings:

  • self-government and local administration documents (after 1945),
  • documents of banks and financial institutions,
  • documents of factories (especially: fishing and sea industry),
  • judiciary documents (courts),
  • notarial files,
  • documents of political parties and organizations (PZPR, ZMP - Polish Youth Union, "Solidarność" Trade Union).

Opening Times

The archive's holdings are available in the workroom open Monday-Friday 8.00 - 14.30

Conditions of Access

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
