History

The archive in Bydgoszcz was created in 1906 and stored the documentation of the liquidated Prussian General Commission for the Provinces of Posen and West Prussia. In independent Poland (1918-1923) it was reorganized and named the "Archive of former General Commision in Bydgoszcz". In 1924 it was included into the network of Polish archives as a branch of Poznań State Archive. In 1939 the Bydgoszcz archive was reorganized as a branch of Reischarchiv Danzig. In 1945-1947 the archive was again the branch of Poznań State Archive. From 1947 it worked as Voivodship State Archive in Bydgoszczm in 1983 was renamed the State Archive in Bydgoszcz.

Nowadays. The State Archive in Bydgoszcz works on the ground oh the Act on National Archival Records and Archives of July 14, 1983, Journal of Law, (Dziennik Ustaw) No 38, 1983.07.19 with later changes.

Building(s)

From the beginning of its existence the Bydgoszcz archive works in the building of the former Prussian General Commission for the Provinces of Posen and West Prussia.

Archival and Other Holdings

The archive in Bydgoszcz possesses the following kinds of holdings:

  • records of towns and villages (19th and 20th century),
  • self-government and local administration documents,
  • judiciary documents (courts and prisons),
  • notarial files,
  • records of German Police from World War II,
  • birth, marriage and death records (Jewish and Protestant),
  • documents of schools,
  • monastic documents (18th and 19th century),
  • documents of craft guilds,
  • documents of families and landed estates.

Opening Times

The State Archive's holdings are available in the workroom open Monday and Wednesday -Friday 7.30 - 15.30, Tuesday 8.00 - 16.00

Conditions of Access

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
