Archival and Other Holdings

The Archive of the Jewish Community of Rome preserves collections of documents related to the Jews of Rome from the age of the Ghetto (1555) to the first half of the twentieth century.

The archive holds 1300 folders and 1600 registers ca. (265 linear meters) related to the Modern age and the Contemporary age from the Emancipation (1848) to the first half of the twentieth century. This second section in particular preserves administrative materials such as accountings and taxes; papers related to the construction of new synagogues; minutes of the meetings of the Community Council; materials related to the World War One and then the persecution of the Jews during the Fascist regime. The contemporary age section includes also photographic materials. A special section is devoted to the Italian traditional Jewish music. In particular six archival fonds are relevant for the history of the Jewish Community of Rome in the Contemporary years:

  • Università degli Ebrei di Roma (1839-1933)
  • Comunità Israelitica di Roma (1871-1954)
  • Casa di Ricovero Di Cave (1941-1942)
