History

The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984 and elected the first Board of Rectors in 1998. Its administrative and academic centre is in the city of Volos. In order to serve the needs of the region of Thessaly, its first academic departments were based on agricultural, educational and technological sciences. In its initial phase of organization and operation there were eight Departments, with seven in Volos and one, the School of Medicine, in Larissa. Its present academic structure consists of sixteen departments, four faculties and all of which were founded by the end of 2000-2001.The Department of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology was founded in 1993 and accepted its first students in 1998.

Geographical and Cultural Context

The archival material covers the city of Volos and the region of Thessaly.

Building(s)

The Papastratos Central Building is a modern construction which joining three separate buildings by an atrium covered by a modern glass dome. Exhibitions and other events take place here. The three joined buildings are: • The renovated Papastratos Old Building, typical for the Volos Strand, used to be the Papastratos Tobacco Warehouse. It is now used as an administrative centre for the Rectorate and Administrative Services of the university. The modern Delmouzos Building, with glass exterior surfaces, comprises lecture halls, the large Kordatos Auditorium and the smaller Saratsis auditorium, the University Ballroom, the Network Operation Centre, the Foreign Languages Office and the Physical Education Office. The New Building-offices for academic staff and secretariats of the departments of the School of Humanities.

Archival and Other Holdings

The department and its lab hold a number of local newspapers from the 20th century (1907-2003).

Opening Times

The reading room is open Monday to Friday: 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. The Archive is closed on public holidays.

Conditions of Access

The archival holdings are mainly accessible to staff and students of the department. The database is accessible to everyone via the website.

Accessibility

Access for the handicapped is possible; wide corridors and a lift provide safe access for the handicapped.

Research Services

Research room is equipped with computers whose on-site Intranet programs allow searching and viewing material not accessible via off-site (Internet) user.
