History

The Thessaloniki History Centre was founded in 1983. Its original title was Historical Archive of the City of Thessaloniki (Istoriko Archeio Polhs Thessalonikis). Since 1995 the Centre operates in its own building at Hippodrome Square, donated by Anastassios and Ioulia Billis.

Archival and Other Holdings

The Thessaloniki History Centre houses the municipal historical archive (from mid 19th century to 1960). Part of this archive is located in the Centre's building and it gradually becomes accessible to scholars. The Centre also possesses a number of important private archival collections (20th century). Moreover, the Centre contains a collection of 2.000 photos (20th century), a collection of 3.500 postcards (early 20th century), as well as a map collection (16th-19th century).
