History
The IAM was established in Thessaloniki in 1954.
Mandates/Sources of Authority
It is one of the forty-eight regional State Archives and operates as an independent branch under the authority of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
Building(s)
After occupying various central buildings of the city, the IAM moved to its present building in 1994. The Russian community of Thessaloniki built the archive’s current building, known as the Russian hospital, in the first decade of the twentieth century with funding from the Russian government. After the October Revolution and the dissolution of the Russian community of Thessaloniki, the building was taken by the Greek state, which used it as a maternity hospital until the mid-1970s, when it was abandoned.
Archival and Other Holdings
IAM contains Ottoman archives, Greek administrative, educational, judicial, ecclesiastical, industrial archives, correspondence files, photograph collections, maps and plans collections, newspapers and periodicals collections, postcards collection, books collection.

The holdings are indexed and computer-searchable onsite with archivist's assistance.
Opening Times
The archives are open to researchers from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 and 15:00, except all official holidays of the Greek state.
Conditions of Access
Photocopying is by request only and involves an assessment by staff to determine if it is possible, with the item's preservation needs of the item taking precedence. Digital cameras are allowed. The use of lap-tops is permitted. Researchers must seek the written permission of the archivist before publication of any material from the archival holdings, and such publication much acknowledge the Archives source.
Accessibility
The archive is wheelchair accessible via a special entrance from a side-road, while a special lift facilitates access to the library room on the first floor. The archives are located quite centrally, a walking distance of about 20 to 25 minutes from the city’s center. They can also be accessed by the bus lines 2, 10, 11, 58,, all of which pass various stops along the central Egnatia Street. Bus tickets can be obtained at small kiosks in every corner of the city, or inside the bus. The buses stop in front of the archive building, at the Efklidi stop. Depending on the traffic, buses generally reach the archive stop in ten minutes.
Research Services
Research room is equipped with computers whose on-site Intranet programs allow searching and viewing material not accessible to the off-site (Internet) user.
Reproduction Services
There are charges for photocopying/digital output. Services free of charge: entry to the reading room; use of finding aids/catalogues/computers; assistance from staff. Some archival holdings have been digitized and are available for viewing and printing at no cost on the Greek State Archives website's Digital Archive Collections/Historical Archive of Macedonia ("Archeiomnimon"). Any copies that a researcher purchases are for personal use only. Copyright permission must be sought for further reproduction or publication.
Public Areas
There is no cafeteria inside the archives, although there are plenty of cafes and small restaurants located nearby.
