History

After the establishment of the Federal State of Hesse the Archives held responsibility for its state ministries and the central public authorities in 1945. Prior to this, the Archives originated from the Ducal Nassau Central Archive. The Archives were officially named "Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchiv" in 1963. In 1985 the Archives were relocated to a new, modern archive building on Mosbacher Straße.

The Hesse Main State Archives are a central archive for the records of Hessian ministries and public and governmental institutions. Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: 1. Hessisches Sozialministerium, Wiedergutmachungsakten (in Abt. 508), 2. Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt in Wiesbaden Dezernat II 25–Entschädigungsbehörde (Abt.518) [BErG bzw. BEG], 3.
