History

The Archives were originally founded in 1482. In 1921 with the creation of the Volksstaat Württemberg, the Haupstaatsarchiv became responsible for the archives of the State. In 1945 the former military archives (records of the 19th and 20th centuries of Württemberg) were integrated into the Hauptstaatsarchiv. Since 1826 the Royal House and State Archives have been located in the Neckarstrasse in Stuttgart. A considerable amount of records from the 19th and 20th centuries were damaged or lost during the war. In 1969 the Hauptsaatsarchiv was housed in a new building, rebuilt on the same site as the former.
