History

The formation of the Archives began in April 1948. After an administrative agreement in 1973 between Saarland und Rheinland-Pfalz collections of Landeshauptarchivs Koblenz und des Landesarchivs Speyer were transferred to the Landesarchiv Saarbrücken. Since 1 January 1993 the Landesarchiv has been considered an independent institution of the state. In 1997, the Archives moved to their current location in Saarbrücken-Scheidt.

Archival and Other Holdings

The holdings of the Archives contain records from various areas within the Rheinland-Palatinate, such the collections of Nassau-Saarbrücken, Herzogtum Lothringen, Herrschaft Dagstuhl, Sachsen-Coburg (St. Wendel), Bergamt and Bergwerksdirektion Saarbrücken. In addition the holdings include personal records from families and individuals of Saarland as well as various administrative documents, maps, drawings, posters, pictures, press documentation, textbooks. Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: Landesentschädigungsamt [includes positive and negative files; BEG]; Landesamt Saar - Vermögenskontrolle (LAS) / Akten der Vermögenskontrolle, Landgericht Saarbrücken (LG.SB) / Restitutionsakten; closed files

Finding Aids, Guides, and Publication

Findbücher as well as Online databanks can be used at the Archives, but are not completely available online. Some of the archival holdings can be researched online: http://www.archivdatenbank.lha-rlp.de/

Use of the Archives for research purposes is possible. Mikrofilm reading machines und computers for use of the online Databank are available for use in the reading room.
