History

State Archive in Blagoevgrad was created in 1952. After having been restructured several times it became a branch of the Regional State Archives in Sofia in 2010.

Archival and Other Holdings

As of January 2018, the archive contained 2,996 archival collections (202,092 archival units). The documents kept by the State Archives - Blagoevgrad are organized in arrays in accordance with the accepted historical periodization. The oldest grouping ("K") includes preserved documents from the Bulgarian Renaissance period and from the period of liberation of the region from Ottoman rule in 1912 to 1944. The second grouping contains documents created from the end of World War II to the present. The third grouping ("B") was is made up of the fonds of the former District Party Archive of the Bulgarian Communist Party - Blagoevgrad, covering the period of 1945 to 1989.

The reading rooms of the State Archives are open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
