History

The Oberösterreichische Landesarchiv, founded 10 January 1986, is a cultural institute and a central archive for state and district authorities of Upper Austria. Of central significance today within the archive is the collection and analysis of Austrian historical source material and to subsequently establish its wider accessibility.

Archival and Other Holdings

Over 900 collections are held within the Oö. Landesarchiv, separated in several individual archival groups, including: the territorial estate archive (Archiv der Landstände), state administration archive, court and financial authority archive, as well as extensive secular and religious manorial records. Court records of crimes of the Nazi regime appear to be present within the Gerichtsarchive. Military records from the Nazi period are also present and can be found in the "Militärische Sammlungen" under the category "Weitere Bestände." Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: 1. Opferfürsorge-Akten Oberösterreich (deceased applicants); 2. Finanzabteilung Bestand Rückstellungen; 3. LG Linz, Sondergerichte–Rückstellungskommission; closed files; restriction: retention period 100 years, access permitted for scientific projects

Finding Aids, Guides, and Publication

There are extensive descriptions and content lists of each archival collection, including an online biographical databank. Certain files can be viewed as full-text (PDF) online.

Use of the archive materials that are not under protected regulations for research purposes is open to the public.
