History

In 1959 after the return of the archives displaced during WWII, a total inventory with the first comprehensive overview of the collections of the Steiermärkischen Landesarchiv was published. Subsequent acquisition of historically significant archives madethe extension of the magazine capacity necessary. Now the Archive is undergoing an extensive process to make their collections accessible online.

Archival and Other Holdings

Collections of the Steiermärkisches Landesarchiv include the state administrative archives (until 1925), court archives, finance and land registry archives. The Landesarchiv also holds materials on regional (until 1925), state government (after 1926) and district commission (Bezirkshauptmannschaften - after 1924), in addition to state building administration, hospitals and railways. The Körperschafts- und Privatarchive contain family, community, religious and individual records. Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: Opferfürsorge-Akten Steiermark (deceased applicants); closed files; restriction: retention period of 100 years, access is permitted for scientific projects
