    Co-founder of the Jewish Historical Committee (Żydowska Komisja Historyczna), a Holocaust research body organized in Lublin in August 1944. In December 1944, the commission became an agency of the Central Committee of Jews in Poland (CKŻP) and was renamed the Central Jewish Historical Commission (Centralna Żydowska Komisja Historyczna). Director (1947-48) of the successor, the Jewish Historical Institute (Żydowski Instytut Historyczny; ŻIH), research institute, archive, library, and museum in Warsaw.

    King of Bulgaria. "Boris III believed Bulgaria's future lay in maintaining neutrality while tilting politically towards the Axis. This policy regained him South Dobruja from Romania in 1940. Still refusing to declare war against the Allies or supply troops to Hitler, he was killed by a pro-Soviet assassin.

    Chief Delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross of Switzerland in Budapest (Hungary) between May 1944 and March 1945. During the period from May 1944 to January 1945, Born issued thousands of Red Cross letters of protection (Schutzbriefe) to Jews. He put over 60 Jewish institutions under Red Cross protection and housed over 7,000 Jewish children and orphans. He worked closely with the other neutral diplomatic legations, and set up dozens of Red Cross protected houses. In 1987, Born was designated as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem (Israel).

    Member of the Relief and Rescue Committee of Budapest; organised rescue and relief for refugees from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland and smuggled Jews into Hungary in 1943. After the German invasion of Hungary in 1944, Brand was approached by Eichmann for "Blood for Goods" deal to negotiate between Jewish leaders and Nazis regarding the sparing of 1 million Jews for 10 000 trucks and other goods. In 1961 Brand testified at Adolf Eichmann’s trial in Jerusalem.
